PONKERAS: TUBERCULOSIS (DEMO + DISFRASANDOSE EP)

Photobucket

I don't think I could have picked a better time to post what is undeniably a really good local band from LA, Tuberculosis. The band consists of members that have been active in the punk scene quite a while (it features ex-members of Hit Me Back, Asko, The Beatings, and Resist and Exist). Their sound can be best compared to bands like Dezerter or Bannlyst, but accompanied with raspy, angry female vocals. In their more recent shows, their sound has shifted to a more anarcho-punk sound, rather than these more hardcore punk sounding releases. I would say somewhat more akind to Dirt, but not quite there yet. Any way, the demo and 7 inch are great, so here they are for your listening pleasure:

VAKRAANT - DISCOGRAPHY

Photobucket

Vakraant was basically the first band I was ever in. It was a Hardcore, D-Beat inspired punk band that tried to pull all our hardcore influences into one. At the time we were listening to a lot of Kaaos, Discharge, MG-15, and Mob 47. This band was started when we were all just about 15 (almost 10 years ago). At the time, many of us didn't know how to play our instruments and it shows in these recordings. The solos are horrible in my opinion and many of the songs have clear mistakes in them. I don't know, maybe I'm just being too harsh on ourselves. In any case, this is the band that basically preceded Rayos X, as both Kaye and I were in this band. We played a lot of shows, got incredibly drunk at all of them (to the point of forgetting songs in the middle of the set), and had some good times and bad times. This CD was released in 2009 by SMYT Records and it was limited to about 70 copies or so. Enjoy!

SABER M - DRINKING WITH JESUS CD-R DEMO

Photobucket

Saber M (which stands for "Sexy Ass Bitches Eating Raw Meat". Clever, huh?) are the local heroes in their hometown of Huntington Park (which is a sub-city in Los Angeles). They play Japanese inspired pogo punk and really make the kids dance every time they play. They used to be way more active in the scene, but have since slowed down due to their guitarist/vocalist's departure to the marines. If you're a fan of Shit-Faced, Discocks, Tom and The Boot Boys, etc... then you'll dig this.

This video looks a bit old, but it's one of the few I found on youtube. You can also see more Saber M in Fronteras Desarmadas Videozine Episode 2:

PONKERAS: LAS VULPESS

Photobucket

There is no way i can let another week pass by without mentioning one of the few Spanish all girl punk bands from the 80's, Las Vulpess. The band consists of four women which prove that you dont have to have a dick to write music or give a fuck of how they may be perceived by others. This is well proven by their debut 7" 'Me Gusta Ser Una Zorra' (translation: I like being a slut). When this 7" debut back in 1983, it was considered controversial, due to the fact that WOMEN were saying they like being sluts (unlike men in male bands that always talk about the subject without it being taboo). This album may be short, as it is only 2 songs, but it holds its place in punk history for breaking so many barriers.

Here are the lyrics so you can sing along:

eh, oh, ah, ah,
ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,... ¡cabrón!

dejando ahora mi profesión (¡zorraaa!)
te pido un deseo de todo corazón,
quiero meter un pico en la polla
a un cerdo carroza llamado lou reed...

me gusta ser una zorra,
me gusta ser una zorra,
me gusta ser una zorra,
eh, oh, ah, ah,
ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,ay,... ¡cabrón!

In 2005, Las Vulpess went back to the studio to officially record all the songs they have. For your listening pleasure I have also included those recording here:

LA BANDA YA BASTA - DEMO & LIVE AT WESTCHESTER SPORTS BAR & GRILL

Photobucket

Everybody knows Poliskitzo. After all, I just talked about them last week. But do you know La Banda Ya Basta, the band that originated Poliskitzo? All 3 current members of Poliskitzo were in Ya Basta and once you hear it, you can immediately tell. All the signature Poliskitzo elements are there. The melodic vocals, the rock n' roll influence, and the great energy. If anything, the only difference between Poliskitzo and Ya Basta is that Ya Basta is more fast paced than Poliskitzo. Nonetheless, these are some killer recordings and a great piece of LA punk history.

ASKO - ME DAS ASKO (2008)

Photobucket

Asko was a band I was in back in 2008. A lot has been said about this tape and it has been hosted on countless other blogs, so I thought I would give an inside perspective on this band, what it meant, and why it died out almost as quickly as it started. At the time when the band started, I had just left Vakraant (my old crusty d-beat band of 6 years). It was created by 3 friends who had nothing better to do and it was really done in a hurry. In fact, most of the songs we had were written within about a week or two. We were influence by bands like THE STALIN, RATOS DE PORAO, and RIP. It was Abe on bass, Gaby on drums, and I was on guitar and vocals. There was really no rhyme or reason to anything we did musically. Gaby and I wanted to play faster, while Abe constantly wanted to play slower. In a way, that kind of helped to balance the music, as without Abe we would've just been a noisy mess. The tape demo was recorded within the month (including a song we could never play live), and the rest is, as they say, history. It was the first release on Silenzio Statico (although back then, that didn't mean shit) and I do believe that to this day, it's still in print. Everything was done quickly and in the end we only played about 12 shows before calling it quits and forming our own separate bands. Gaby and Abe formed Tuberculosis (a name we had messed around with after Abe actually got Tuberculosis!), while Kaye and I went on to form Rayos X. So that's it. It was band that lived fast, played fast, and died young. It was made out of the frustration and boredom that we all felt. It was fun while it lasted, but we all had to move on. To this day, everyone always asks me about it, so I decided to do a post on it. Hopefully this answers everyone's questions.

Here's some videos I uploaded to youtube (I think it's our last show). It's a little dark and I'm a little drunk, but it's all good:

And here's the only tape we ever released:
